Privacy
Commitment to privacy: The privacy of individuals is important to the University of Virginia. To better protect their privacy, we provide this notice explaining our online information policy and practices. To make this notice easy to find, we make it available through a link on our homepage. Our privacy and public records obligations are governed solely by applicable Virginia statutes, including, but not limited to, the Virginia Privacy Protection Act of 1976, the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, and by any applicable U.S. federal laws.
Notice about the information we collect: This notice applies to all information collected by or submitted to official University of Virginia websites (see the definition above). The following information explains the Internet privacy policy and practices that the University of Virginia has adopted for its official websites. In legal terms, it shall not be construed as a contractual promise, and the University of Virginia reserves the right to amend it at any time without notice.
In addition to this explanation of policy and practice, the University of Virginia encourages its schools, departments, divisions, and other units contributing to its official webpages to provide specific notices about the collection and use of any personal information associated with those pages. The following information is therefore general, and we encourage you to read page-specific notices to ensure that you understand precisely the applicable privacy policies and practices.
When you access our webpages, the client information and the essential and nonessential technical information listed below is automatically collected—we refer to those categories collectively as “access” information. No other information is collected through our official websites except what you deliberately decide to send to us (for example, by clicking on a link to send us an e-mail). The information you might choose to send us is listed below as “optional information.”
Automatically Collected Access Information
Client information is the Internet domain and Internet address of the computer you are using.
Essential technical information is identification of the page or service you are requesting, type of browser and operating system you are using; and the date and time of access.
Nonessential technical information is the Internet address of the website from which you linked directly to our website, and the cookie information described below.
Optional information:
- When you send us an e-mail
- Your name, e-mail address, and the content of your e-mail
- When you complete online forms
- All data you choose to fill in or confirm, including credit or debit card information if you are ordering a product or making a payment, as well as information about other people if you are ordering a gift and want it sent directly to the recipient’s address.
The way we use information: Client information is used to route the requested webpage to the client’s computer for viewing. In theory, the requested webpage and the routing information could be discerned by other entities involved in transmitting the requested page. We do not control the privacy practices of those entities. Essential and nonessential technical information helps us respond to a client’s request in an appropriate format [or in a personalized manner[do2] ] and helps us plan website improvements. Optional information enables us to provide services or information tailored more specifically to clients’ needs or to forward messages or inquiries to another entity that is better able to do so and to allow us to plan website improvements.
Darden Business Publishing might use nonidentifying and aggregate information to better design its website[do3] For example, Darden Business Publishing might report the number of individuals who visited a certain area on its website, or the number of men and the number of women who filled out its registration form but would not disclose anything that could be used to identify those individuals.
Darden Business Publishing might keep client information from its systems indefinitely after the webpage is transmitted but does not try to obtain any information to link the information to the individuals who browse its website. On those rare occasions when attempts to breach its computer security occur, logs of access information are retained to permit a security investigation and, in such cases, might be forwarded together with any other relevant information in its possession to law enforcement agencies.
Under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act, any records in Darden Business Publishing’s possession at the time of a Freedom of Information Request might be subject to inspection by or disclosure to members of the public for any purpose they may desire. As indicated above, client information might be retained after transmission of the requested webpage and might be available for inspection.
Darden Business Publishing uses the information clients provide about themselves when placing an order or request only for the purpose of completing that order or request. It does not share client information with outside parties except to the extent necessary to complete that order or request. Similarly, Darden Business Publishing uses the information provided about some other client when placing an order or request only to complete that order or request. Again, Darden Business Publishing does not share this information with outside parties except to the extent necessary to complete that order or request.
Darden Business Publishing generally uses return e-mail addresses only to answer the e-mails it receives. Such addresses are generally not used for any other purpose and are in compliance with University of Virginia and state policy and are not shared with outside parties.
Finally, Darden Business Publishing never uses or shares the personal identifiable information provided to it online in ways unrelated to the ones described above without displaying clear notice on the particular site and without also providing clients with an opportunity to opt-out or otherwise prohibit such unrelated uses.

Providing information is your choice: There is no legal requirement for you to provide any information on our website. But our website will not work without the essential routing and technical information. Failure of your browser to provide nonessential technical information will not prevent your use of our website but could prevent certain features from working. For any optional information that is requested at the website, failure to provide the requested information will mean that the particular feature or service associated with that part of the webpage might not be available to you.
Our commitment to data security: To prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of information, Darden Business Publishing has put in place appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to safeguard and secure the information it collects online, consistent with the policies of the University of Virginia and with the laws and regulations of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
