This case describes the changing competiton in the ports industry in Asia, focusing specifically on the South East Asian region of Singapore and Malaysia and the Southern Chinese region of Hong Kong and Shenzhen. Ports play a major role for Asia's economic growth, with many countries and local municipalities rushing to develop gateway ports as well as transshipment ports. The case describes the challenges facing 3 major port operators?a state owned company (Port of Singapore Authority) looking to expand internationally, an Asian multi-national corporation (Hutchison Whampoa) looking to solidify its operations in China, and the terminals operator division of a European shipping conglomerate (Maersk). Each operator has a unique position in the market and therefore faces different strategic choices. This case can be used for a course in International Business, Business Strategy or Microeconomics to introduce the following concepts: industry economics and industry analysis, role of the government in business, and strategic responses to changing industry economics.
