Once upon a time, in 1991, two companies got together to form an alliance. They competed in a big industry that was capital intensive and had a long payback period. A few major players dominated this industry, and there were lots of niche companies whose business depended on maintaining relationships with the big players. Company A was big, strong, and one of the elite (but it had recently been through some traumatic times). Company B was young and ambitious, and wanted to become a bigger player in the industry. They had known each other for a number of years. In fact, Company B had once been a supplier to Company A. But now they had an alliance.
