In October 2001, Bethlehem Steel filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, and Hank Barnette was no longer at the helm of the second-largest steel manufacturer in the United States. Before stepping down, Barnette had taken many significant steps toward leaving a legacy of community revitalization and historic preservation for Bethlehem Steel's land in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Barnette and other company leaders had put in place legal mechanisms and relationships that would continue to guide the redevelopment of the nearly 1,800-acre brownfield site throughout the next decade.
