Jon Mayson's life story and personal achievements are central to understanding the successful transformation of the Port of Tauranga. From the day he was born, Mayson was a unique individual. He learned to cope with personal challenges as a young man and followed his heart to the sea. His personal values and courage served him well. Mayson's life philosophy can be captured in his favorite phrase: "Why not?" He took over the Port of Tauranga in 1997, and under his leadership, the port was transformed from being a modest success to being a leader in New Zealand. Mayson's life has been one of values-based learning, and it has been successful.
